Giving Thanks Through Service

At St. Bernard School, the spirit of Thanksgiving shines brightly through our cherished tradition of giving back. This year, our annual Thanksgiving Baskets Project once again brought our school and parish communities together to provide a heartfelt blessing to families in need.

Each classroom had the meaningful task of filling two baskets with food items. The students embraced the opportunity to serve, decorating the baskets with care and adding a personal touch by writing thoughtful cards to include inside. The project didn’t stop at collecting food—students also sacrificed part of their free time to “shop” at the school store for any remaining items needed to complete the baskets.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of St. Bernard Parish and the contributions from our students, staff, and teachers, we filled enough baskets to bless 50 families. Each family received a decorated basket brimming with food, an additional grocery bag of staples, and two loaves of fresh bread donated by Breadsmith. Teachers pitched in by donating money to purchase pies and potatoes, ensuring these families could enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

A project of this magnitude wouldn’t be possible without the tireless efforts of our dedicated staff. A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Bongel, Mrs. Soderdahl, Mrs. Zaruba, and Mrs. Heling for their organization and leadership in making this service project a success.

At St. Bernard, we strive to instill the values of gratitude and service in our students. The Thanksgiving Baskets Project is a beautiful reminder of the power of community, compassion, and giving thanks by giving back.

Wishing everyone in the St. Bernard family a joyful and blessed Thanksgiving!

Honoring Our Heroes: A Heartfelt Veterans Day Celebration at St. Bernard School

On Friday, November 15, St. Bernard School opened its doors and hearts to honor the brave men and women who have served our country. This special day began with a beautiful Mass, where students had the unique opportunity to invite a veteran to join them. The church was filled with a sense of gratitude as Father Adam extended a heartfelt blessing to all veterans in attendance.

Following Mass, the celebration continued with a social gathering in Bishop Hall. It was a wonderful chance for students to spend time with their special guests, sharing conversations over coffee, juice, and donuts. The St. Bernard band added to the festive atmosphere, performing a selection of patriotic and uplifting songs that brought smiles to everyone’s faces.

One of the highlights of the event was the display of memorabilia brought in by our honored veterans. Students eagerly explored these artifacts, gaining a deeper appreciation for the sacrifices and experiences of those who have served. This hands-on interaction sparked meaningful discussions and brought history to life in a way no textbook could.

A huge thank you goes out to Mrs. Waack and Ms. Winkler for their thoughtful planning and organization of this event. Their efforts ensured the day was not only memorable but also meaningful for all involved.

Above all, we extend our deepest gratitude to the veterans who joined us and to all who have served our country. Your courage and dedication inspire us, and we are forever thankful for the freedoms we enjoy because of your sacrifice.

Thank you for being our heroes.

Happy Veterans Day from all of us at St. Bernard School!

Celebrating Culture and Community: Our Second Annual Día de los Muertos Event

On Monday, November 4, our school community gathered for a beautiful celebration of Día de los Muertos, a tradition that honors loved ones who have passed and celebrates life and memory. Families from all grade levels came together for an evening full of festivities, culture, and community.

The evening began with a blessing of the ofrenda, a vibrant altar that held photos, candles, and offerings. This touching ceremony set the tone for an evening filled with love, remembrance, and joy.

The talented performers from SOL: Baile Folklórico wowed us with traditional dances that highlighted the grace and energy of Mexican heritage. Mariachi Luis Gaytan brought music to life, filling the space with the soulful sounds of mariachi. Our own school choir and band students also took the stage, showcasing their hard work and adding to the atmosphere of celebration.

One of the highlights of the evening was a special reading of La Leyenda de la Momia del Ojo Verde, a captivating tale read by a local author, who brought this story to life for children and adults alike.

Families enjoyed delicious food from local favorites, including Maldonados, La Chata, Green Bay Tamale Company, and Mely’s Cake & Yahualica Restaurante. These local vendors provided traditional dishes and sweet treats that added warmth and flavor to our gathering.

The evening concluded with families playing lotería, a beloved Mexican game of chance similar to bingo. Laughter, excitement, and friendly competition filled the air as everyone played together, wrapping up a truly memorable evening.

This year’s Día de los Muertos event was a beautiful celebration of culture, community, and remembrance. It was wonderful to see so many families come together, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s celebration. Thank you to everyone who made this event possible and to everyone who joined us.

St. Bernard School Celebrates Creativity at Second Annual Pumpkin Decorating Contest

St. Bernard School was brimming with creativity and excitement this week as students in grades 3K-8 participated in the school’s second annual pumpkin decorating contest, organized by beloved librarian Mrs. Alvarez. A total of 37 students crafted pumpkins inspired by their favorite book characters, transforming their gourds into colorful tributes to some of the most beloved stories.

This year’s contest encouraged students to merge reading with artistry by choosing a character from a book they’d read and designing a pumpkin to bring that character to life. Each student’s unique creation offered a new interpretation, sparking inspiration and fostering a love for reading and the arts.

The competition was a close one, with every pumpkin showing impressive attention to detail and creativity. After voting during their weekly library visits, the students selected their top three favorites, with this year’s awards going to the following talented students:

  • 1st Place: Fifth-grader Kami stole the show with her pumpkin inspired by Ferdinand. Her pumpkin’s gentle and calm expression captured the spirit of the story’s lovable bull.
  • 2nd Place: Third-grader Fernie’s take on The Nightmare Before Christmas showcased her artistic skills, giving her pumpkin a whimsical yet spooky twist in honor of the classic story.
  • 3rd Place: Fifth-grader Isabella charmed the crowd with her interpretation of If You Give A Mouse a Cookie, turning her pumpkin into the playful character of the iconic, cookie-loving mouse.

The contest highlighted the enthusiasm and creativity of all students involved, as well as Mrs. Alvarez’s dedication to fostering a love of literature in fun, engaging ways. The annual event has quickly become a beloved tradition at St. Bernard School, one that brings the school community together and gives every student a chance to share their talents.

Congratulations to Kami, Fernie, and Isabella for their outstanding entries, and thank you to all who participated. With yet another successful contest in the books, we can’t wait to see the imaginative pumpkins our students create next year!

Bridging Knowledge and Creativity: 5th Graders Take on LEGO Bridge-Building Challenge!

At St. Bernard School, we believe hands-on experiences deepen understanding and make learning come alive. Recently, our 5th-grade students demonstrated this by using their STEM skills to build bridges from LEGOs, putting both their creativity and knowledge of architecture to the test. This exciting project not only challenged their problem-solving skills but also brought their study of bridge types and architecture into tangible form.

For weeks, the 5th graders dove into the world of architecture, learning about the engineering behind different bridge structures and understanding how bridges are designed to withstand weight and resist environmental forces. They studied various bridge styles, including beam, arch, truss, and suspension bridges. Each bridge type has unique structural advantages and challenges, which the students explored through class discussions, diagrams, and real-world examples.

To put their newfound knowledge into action, each student was paired up with a partner and assigned a different bridge style to recreate using LEGOs. They were challenged to make their bridges not only structurally sound but also aesthetically pleasing, as real-life architects must do. The LEGO materials required the students to carefully consider the size, balance, and weight distribution of each piece, reinforcing the engineering principles they had studied.

Each pair used trial and error to determine the best way to create a stable bridge, discovering the importance of balance, support, and teamwork. Some students experimented with arches to support their bridge spans, while others constructed sturdy beams and towers to form the base of a truss bridge. By working together, the students strengthened their understanding of collaboration and resilience, learning that engineering is as much about problem-solving and adaptability as it is about design.

After hours of planning and building, each pair of students presented their completed LEGO bridges to the class, explaining the design choices they made and the specific techniques they used to ensure stability. They also discussed the challenges they faced during the building process and how they worked together to overcome them. The variety of bridge styles showcased their understanding of the structural benefits and limitations of each type, and every team’s unique approach reflected their creativity and resourcefulness.

As they presented their work, it was clear that this LEGO bridge-building project had not only taught them about STEM and architecture but also fostered a sense of pride and accomplishment. By building something together from the ground up, the 5th graders gained a new appreciation for the role of architects and engineers in shaping the world around us.

At St. Bernard School, we’re committed to providing opportunities for our students to think critically, work collaboratively, and build their confidence in STEM. We’re thrilled to see where their curiosity and creativity will lead them next!

St. Bernard 6th Graders Take on Camp Tekakwitha Adventure

St. Bernard School’s 6th-grade class just wrapped up a two-day adventure at Camp Tekakwitha, and it’s safe to say this trip will be unforgettable. For one night and two days, students swapped classrooms for the great outdoors, bonding over campfires, team activities, and even a dazzling Northern Lights show.

The trip was all about team-building and fun. Right off the bat, students got involved in team challenges that made them work together and think on their feet, strengthening friendships and creating hilarious memories. And the fun didn’t stop there—they even got to perform skits for each other, giving everyone a good laugh and letting classmates show off their creative sides.

The outdoor adventures were a highlight. Canoeing on the calm waters of Camp Tekakwitha let students experience the beauty of nature up close. There was plenty of time to explore, soak up the fresh air, and just enjoy being outside with friends.

The evening was magical, with everyone gathering around a campfire to roast s’mores, trade stories, and just hang out. As if that wasn’t amazing enough, the students were treated to a show from nature: the Northern Lights. Many of them were seeing it for the first time, and it was a sight they’ll never forget.

The trip also included some quiet time for reflection with Jesus, giving everyone a chance to slow down and appreciate their surroundings. The combination of nature and reflection added a deeper meaning to the trip, giving everyone a renewed sense of peace.

“Camp Tekakwitha was incredible,” said Ms. Dudzik, assistant principal at St. Bernard. “We had so much fun, made tons of memories, and the students grew closer as a class. I’ll always remember this trip.”

All in all, the 6th graders returned from Camp Tekakwitha with a stronger sense of unity and friendship. Their time away gave them memories they’ll carry with them through middle school and beyond—a reminder of the power of teamwork, the beauty of nature, and the special connections that come from stepping outside their comfort zones. For the Class of 2027, Camp Tekakwitha wasn’t just a trip; it was the start of lifelong bonds and experiences they’ll cherish for years to come.
