This past Friday, January 17, the students of St. Bernard School gathered in Bishop Hall for one of the most anticipated academic events of the year—the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee. Sixty-one talented spellers from grades 5-8 took the stage, ready to test their skills and compete for the title of champion. With the rest of the fifth through eighth graders cheering them on, the atmosphere was electric with anticipation and support.
The competition was fierce, spanning ten intense rounds. Each round brought a mix of challenging words that tested the depth of the students’ vocabularies and their ability to stay composed under pressure. Teachers and students watched in awe as the participants showcased their spelling talents and determination.
Ultimately, it was seventh-grader Asher N. who emerged victorious, clinching the title with the word “anecdotes.” Rossebella J. earned a well-deserved second place, and Jade E. took third place after an impressive showing. These top spellers demonstrated exceptional skill, and their hard work and preparation shone brightly throughout the event.
The spelling bee lasted nearly two hours, a testament to the dedication and talent of all who participated. Asher’s win earned him not only the honor of being St. Bernard School’s top speller but also a $25 gift card of his choice, generously provided by the Student Council.
Events like the spelling bee are a wonderful reminder of the importance of academic excellence and community spirit at St. Bernard School. Congratulations to Asher, Rossebella, Jade, and all the participants who took part in this memorable event!
