At St. Bernard School, we believe in providing our students with unique opportunities to learn and grow beyond the classroom. On Thursday, January 23rd, and Friday, January 24th, our 7th-grade students embarked on an unforgettable two-day field trip to Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya, where they embraced the outdoors, learned valuable life skills, and created memories to last a lifetime.
Despite less than an inch of snow, the students and staff made the most of their time at camp, enjoying a variety of enriching and exciting activities. One of the highlights of the trip was learning essential survival skills. The students worked together to build their own fires and shelters, developing not only practical knowledge but also teamwork and problem-solving abilities.
Another standout activity was a game called Alpha Beta, which taught the importance of communication and cultural understanding. By participating in this interactive exercise, students learned to appreciate and celebrate one another’s differences—a lesson that extends far beyond the campgrounds.
The campers also tried their hand at throwing an atlatl, a unique and historical skill that challenged their precision and focus. During their free time, students had the chance to enjoy winter activities like ice skating and sledding, making the most of the crisp outdoor air and beautiful camp setting.
The evening at Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya was just as special. Gathered together, the students listened to the traditional camp story of Ole Peterson, immersing themselves in the magic of storytelling and bonding over shared experiences.
The next morning, the learning and fun continued with a game called “Predator, Prey.” This interactive activity gave students a hands-on understanding of the food chain and the importance of natural resources in our ecosystem. They also practiced orienteering skills during a scavenger hunt using compasses, honing their navigation abilities while exploring the campgrounds.
The two days at Camp U-Nah-Li-Ya were filled with laughter, learning, and lasting connections. These experiences are a testament to the incredible opportunities we strive to offer our students at St. Bernard School. By stepping outside of the traditional classroom setting, our students grow not only academically but socially and emotionally as well.
We are so proud of our 7th graders for embracing this adventure with enthusiasm and curiosity. Field trips like this one highlight the rich and diverse experiences that make St. Bernard School such a special place to learn and grow.
