8th Grade Charity Basketball Games: A Slam Dunk for a Good Cause

At St. Bernard School, we love a good game of basketball, but when it’s for charity, it makes every shot, pass, and cheer even more meaningful. Our annual 8th Grade Charity Basketball Games took place on Friday, February 21, bringing together students, staff, and parents for an exciting morning of friendly competition—all while raising money for a great cause.

The first matchup of the day featured DC Games vs. Marvel Games. It was a tough battle, with Marvel Games taking an early lead. However, in a thrilling comeback, DC Games pulled ahead in the second half to claim victory. The excitement continued with the second game, where The Lion King faced off against The Lorax. Both teams played with heart, but in the end, The Lion King emerged as the winner.

Admission to the event was just 25 cents, making it possible for all students in grades K-7 to attend one of the games and cheer on their favorite teams. To add to the fun, students had the opportunity to purchase delicious snacks, including chips, fruit snacks, and desserts, which were generously donated by our 6th and 7th graders. The $260 that was raised will be donated to support California wildfire relief efforts, showing that even a small contribution can make a big difference.

The halftime show was a highlight of the event, as students sang along to Disney songs and watched Mr. Lambert wow the crowd with a few impressive half-court shots. The energy in the gym was contagious, with students, teachers, and parents all coming together to celebrate school spirit and generosity.

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who made this event possible. Mrs. MacDonald did a fantastic job as the announcer, keeping the energy high throughout the games. Mr. Lambert and Coach Heling officiated as referees, ensuring fair play. Mrs. Kramer and Ms. Dudzik kept things running smoothly by updating the scoreboard and managing the game clock. And, of course, a special thank you to the parents who came out to cheer on their 8th graders, making the event even more special for our students.

This annual tradition is one we look forward to every year—not just for the friendly competition but for the opportunity to come together as a school community to support a meaningful cause. We can’t wait to see what next year’s games will bring!
