Fire safety week was an exciting and meaningful experience for our youngest learners at St. Bernard School! Both our preschool and kindergarten students had the opportunity to learn directly from local firefighters who brought important lessons to life in an age-appropriate and engaging way.
Our preschoolers welcomed Firefighter Jordan and Ms. Kelsey, who spent time teaching students how to stay safe if there’s ever a fire at home or at school. They learned the importance of knowing two ways out, never hiding during an emergency, and always calling for help from a trusted adult. The highlight of the visit came when Firefighter Jordan put on his full firefighting gear—helmet, mask, oxygen tank, and all—so students could see what a firefighter looks like up close. Many children are naturally startled by the look or sound of a firefighter’s equipment, so this demonstration helped them understand that firefighters are friendly helpers who are there to keep everyone safe.
In kindergarten, students enjoyed a hands-on learning experience with members of the Green Bay Fire Department. Firefighters set up a special safety experience where students practiced how to safely exit through a window, crawl low under “smoke,” and call 911 once they were out of the house. The lesson reinforced what to do if a fire happens at home and gave students a chance to build confidence through practice. Teachers and firefighters also discussed the importance of checking smoke detectors, creating a family escape plan, and knowing a safe meeting spot outside.
These visits not only provided valuable safety education but also encouraged curiosity and courage among our students. The children were full of thoughtful questions about the fire trucks, the tools firefighters use, and how they help people in emergencies. Firefighter Jordan and the Green Bay Fire Department team patiently answered every question, helping our students see firsthand how preparation and teamwork keep our community safe.
We are incredibly grateful to our local fire departments for their ongoing partnership and dedication to educating children about safety. Experiences like these remind us how important it is to start safety education early and make it interactive and memorable.
Thank you to Firefighter Jordan, Ms. Kelsey, and the Green Bay Fire Department for helping our preschool and kindergarten students learn these lifesaving lessons in such a fun and positive way!
