Measuring Growth Through Academic Rigor: STAR Assessments

At St. Bernard School, we are committed to fostering academic excellence and ensuring that every student is supported in their learning journey. This week, our students are participating in the STAR assessments for fall. Each student takes one math test and one reading/early literacy test, providing us with valuable data to guide instruction throughout the school year.

The STAR assessments are not just tests; they are important tools that help us better understand where students are excelling and where they may need additional support. By measuring proficiency and growth in these foundational areas, we can align our instruction to meet the diverse needs of every learner in our classrooms.

WHY STAR MATTERS

  • Early Insight: Results give teachers an early snapshot of each student’s strengths and learning needs.
  • Instructional Planning: Data is used to adjust instruction, differentiate learning, and set meaningful goals for students.
  • Measuring Growth: By administering STAR multiple times a year, we can monitor student progress and celebrate growth.

Academic rigor is more than simply challenging students. It means providing the right support at the right time so all learners can thrive. The STAR assessments allow us to combine high expectations with purposeful instruction, ensuring that our students continue to grow in both skills and confidence.

At St. Bernard, we believe in teaching the whole child and preparing them for future success. The STAR data we gather now in the fall will serve as the foundation for instructional decisions, interventions, and enrichment opportunities all year long.

Together, we are building a culture of learning that values both achievement and growth.
