Our 4th and 5th grade students had an unforgettable opportunity as they spent the day learning about space at the Mulva Cultural Center. Thanks to a special partnership, each student was even able to bring along one special guest to share in the experience. It truly was the best field trip ever.
The visit centered around the Life in Space exhibition, an engaging collection featuring more than fifty unique artifacts from space flight history. Students explored original NASA objects, astronaut memorabilia, models of rockets and satellites, space suits, shuttle tiles, and even a moon rock. The exhibit brought the world of space exploration to life by highlighting the journeys of astronauts, scientists, and technicians who made it all possible.
One of the highlights was walking through life-sized models of a rocket and the space station, giving students a first-hand understanding of what it might feel like to live and work in orbit. They participated in a scavenger hunt that encouraged them to seek out plaques, artifacts, and hidden details across the exhibition. Every stop added a new layer to their growing knowledge about space travel.
The hands-on experiences were just as exciting. Students tested out virtual reality challenges to see what it would be like to walk in space, and they climbed into simulators that made them feel as though they were flying through the galaxy. Our bravest explorers even stepped into the Multi-Axis Trainer, a spinning simulator that mimics the tumble astronauts might experience during reentry. Their laughter, determination, and courage made the moment unforgettable.
The visit wrapped up with a space-themed video that tied together everything they had learned throughout the day. Between the artifacts, costumes, hands-on technology, and immersive experiences, students gained a deeper appreciation for the science, bravery, and teamwork behind space exploration.
We are so grateful to the Mulva Cultural Center for welcoming our students and for offering this extraordinary opportunity. If you have a chance to visit the Life in Space exhibit yourself, it will be on display until January 5. It is an incredible way to step into the world of astronauts without ever leaving Wisconsin.
